Interview with JA Jackson:

How and when did you get started as a writer?

As a youngster I composed poems, short stories I used to keep friends amuse with them, on the playground at recess. I was always the kid that got up in Sunday school to recite something.

Next, I remember that in six grade they put me on the school’s newspaper. Sometime during my sixth-grade year, my teacher and principal asked me to use my energies for the school paper and they placed me on the committee to help write the script for a Cinderella themed play for my sixth-grade class.

Next, In high school I did the daily news board cast, this took place each day at 10:00 and I will be the school’s news anchor. I would collect stories from those submitted or what I gather during lunchtime, or after school.

Later in life, I wrote articles for my women’s group newsletter and continued writing stories.  During the same time, I was writing a novel that I called A Geek, An Angel, and Gator Gumbo. It was over 150,000 words. I was challenged by my husband to print it out and let him read it. He even brought me a printer so that I could do so.  Once it was printed, he edited and asked me if I knew that I was a writer? He encouraged my writing and also encouraged me to self-published.

What are your goals as an author?

My goals are simple, first to always write, each and every day, something. If, I’m writing a book at least two pages or more. If I’m editing/revising at least a half of a chapter or more. My long-term goal is the length of one year. During that one-year period, my goal is to write at least one to two novels. Maybe more, if I limit myself to a word count.

Finally, my goal is to grow my reader base. I feel I will do this with each series book that I write. Currently, I have two series growing.  The first is Lovers, Players & The Seducer, as I am now writing Book III of this series.  And my second series is Mistress of Desire and the Orchid Lover I currently have Book II out for this series.   I am considering continues series for my other standalone books, such as The Proposition, When A Taker Dreams, Deceiver’s Secret.

I haven’t released my book Diamond at Midnight yet, but I know that it will most defiantly be a series book.

In summary, these are my long-term goals.

What inspires you to write?

I am inspired by many things. Tidbits of odd knowledge that I pick up while reading. Odd questions that fill my head during the day, for example, when I have a what if moment.  In addition, I find inspiration in meaningful life experiences. Such as childhood memories.  I even get inspiration following the loss of a loved one, from remembering old stores they used to tell, or old quirks and laughter.  I even find inspiration sometimes in the dark side of living this life. So, in summary, my inspiration comes from many places, and spaces I‘ve been.

If you could be one of your characters for a day, who would it be and why?

In Book II, none other than Camille Baptiste-Garcia, because she is down to earth, centered and knows what’s important. Her friends and family are always at the center of her thoughts. I’ve been told by my friends who’ve read my books they can always see which character is very much like me.

What can we expect in the near future?

I am currently working on Book III of Lovers’ Players and The Seducer. I haven’t really set the title in stone yet.  But it is along the lines of the Prodigal Son returning home.

In addition, I have completed another book I call, Diamond at Midnight. This story takes place in Chicago and it is the first book in a new series. I have the book jacket and editing completed. I just need to give it a final read through and then make it available for “Pre-sale”.  I may release it in December 2018.
