Book Tour: Flawed by Vivian Kohlman

Today I’m excited to have a chance to interview Vivian Kohlman as part of her book tour for her contemporary romance, Flawed:

Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in Washington, DC and its suburbs, and I LOVE this metro area! I received an undergrad and graduate degree from American University (in DC) and have worked in the Information Technology consulting field for over a decade. I love what I do for a living, but love writing romance novels even more!

I’ve written five books (so far!) in the Young and Privileged of Washington, DC series…it’s a hobby of mine that I hope to some day turn into my fulltime job.

I’m married and hang out with my husband in most of my spare time (I’m slightly introverted). We like to do things around the city (mostly brunches and happy hour, but we also visit the Smithsonian and other activities around the city).

How do you reward yourself for completing a manuscript?

I don’t, really. As soon as the first draft is complete, I start to edit it. When the book’s completely done, I upload it to Amazon and start the next book or project (if I haven’t already). I don’t feel the need to reward myself; I guess it’s a big deal, but all completing a book means is that I’m free to start the next.

I greatly enjoy the process of writing, and absolutely love being passionate about a story. I don’t write unless the bug bites me; and once it does, I write quickly and fervently. Finishing one project has often lit the fire for another story, so I guess you can say that I reward myself by jumping in to something new.

What was the inspiration for Flawed?

I spent my teens and twenties with a large, demanding social life. During this period, I had a great deal of friends and acquaintances in our most hormonally driven times of our lives. The result? A lot of love stories experienced by either my friends or me.

The love story of Kara is loosely based on true-life love stories and events. The characters in Flawed are all based on real people—my real friends and family. And yes, Kara’s love interest was real, too…though the character in the book (as well as all the others) was changed a bit.

I was inspired to write this book by nothing more than it’s a great story that I wanted to put on paper. I read romance novels all the time and just decided to write down this story one day. I did it for myself, as a hobby, then wanted to share it with friends and family, and then—when I realized the writing bug bit me—I published it and started writing the next book.

What did you like most about the heroine?

Kara’s smart and introverted, and isn’t a victim. This isn’t a poor girl/rich guy story, nor is it a guy-saves-girl story. She’s strong, can take care of herself, yet isn’t afraid to open her heart. I don’t know that I’d characterize Kara as a heroine, but she does come out of challenging events even stronger for it. And she doesn’t hide her flaws—when her heart gets broken, she drinks too much and goes out too much, but she’s honest about it.

About the Book

That guy—the one that most girls would run away from—captured Kara’s attention and wouldn’t let it go. As expected, he turned out to be a player. So she cut him off.

But he wasn’t done with her yet. He waited until the memory of their start would have been forgotten—at least, softened a bit. Then he returned to her life, and captured her heart.

Finally blissfully happy, they fall in love and decide to make it official…until his past catches up with him and he destroys her again. But this is it…this is the last time she’ll fall for him.

And she keeps telling herself that until she almost believes it.

Note from Author:

The book, Flawed, is not erotica, but does include some steamy scenes, and contains adult situations (curse words, drinking alcohol, etc).

Excerpt

I picked up my phone to check for messages and, well, to be honest I was using it as a way to not have to speak to whatever guy Dania left me with.

“Hi Kara, I’m Naheed,” a deep, relaxed voice stated.

When my eyes met his, everything seemed to stop. I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t hear the music anymore, and I felt like I was about to faint…I was mesmerized by him. He was gorgeous, but it was more than that. I felt his presence in my stomach.

He had naturally tan skin, dark brown thick and wavy hair, deep and large brown eyes with black eyelashes a mile long…and a slight under-bite that that instantly brought my attention to his full, perfect lips. He was so familiar to me, but I couldn’t place him.

I looked down to stop myself from staring and noticed that my bare, crossed legs were nearly touching his leg; we were very close—and he was slightly leaning in towards me. I suddenly wished I wore jeans instead of this short skirt. I felt exposed…and had to fight to keep my leg from moving to touch his.

The four words he said to me were echoing through my head…and I still couldn’t respond. I could only look at him…and I saw nothing else. I sat there in silence for way too long…unable to do much more than barely smile through what probably looked to be an unimpressed expression (I was good at hiding my emotions).  …sometimes that came back to haunt me.
