Tell us about the Tempting Signs series.
Tempting Signs is a multi-author limited run romance novella series, published by Fated Desires Publishing. There are 12 books, each by a different author, each releasing during a different month/zodiac sign. Each book is completely standalone. The world and characters are not shared. You can easily read book as a one-off without suspecting you are missing something. The worlds and characters aren’t shared. The only things that are consistent is that one or both of the main characters have to be born under the sign when the book releases, they have to be contemporary romances without any paranormal elements. And they all have to sizzle. (Of course, we’d love for you to read each and every one, but you will definitely not feel at sea if you don’t!
HER CAPTAIN releases December 15, 2015, so it’s the series Capricorn book. The hero, Slate Claybourne, is an ex-Navy SEAL and he’s a total Capricorn, very responsible, very patient, very earth and down-to-earth.
I decided to pair him with his complete opposite: Holly Harper, a fiery Aries. Aries is a fire sign and Holly is feisty, spontaneous, impulsive, unpredictable – everything Slate isn’t! They are halves of a whole and extra-combustible together! Loved writing them.
What draws you to write paranormal romance?
HER CAPTAIN is a contemporary, without any paranormal elements. So, yes, something of a departure for me. It’s only my third contemporary. I love paranormals because with a few exceptions, such as when you are working with a shared world series such as Decadent Publishing’s Black Hills Wolves series, almost anything goes! You build your world, make up your own consistencies and rules for that world and you populate it! It’s complete escapism. Except when there’s a “series bible” that sets out certain elements you must have in the world, as with the Black Hills Wolves series, it’s all your creation and almost anything goes!
What do you like most about your hero Slate Claybourne?
Slate is a reluctant hero, super responsible, steadfast, loyal and patient. A total Capricorn. But he’s also psychically and emotionally damaged from so many tours as a special ops sniper overseas, and he’s desperate to get back to the hometown routine he was so eager to leave behind when he left to serve his country, find adventure. He suffers from PTSD, so he’s not crazy about being around people. He needs a bouncy, effervescent heroine like Holly to drag him back to the land of the living. And Holly is every bit as sparkly as a diamond, which is the Aries birth sign.
How did you come up with your idea for Her Captain?
Oh, so many things! All I had in my head originally was that the hero should be a captain. It was going to be a word play on Capricorn. I’m a Capricorn and my birthday is in January, so I toyed around with Captain January. (Yes, like the ancient Shirley Temple movie.) But I didn’t want people picturing that movie, and HER CAPTAIN was scheduled to release December 15, 2015—just in time for the holidays. So I wanted there to also be a winter holiday theme. I also love the Billy Joel video Downeaster Alexa, about the hardships of Long Island lobstermen/fishermen. Moved the setting up north on an island similar to Cape Cod, with a storied fishing history, but dependent in modern times on the summer tourist industry. Holly takes over a ramshackle – possibly haunted inn – on Slate’s home town on Pieberry Island (a fictious place, but with a backstory all its own), where he’s gone to find peace. And then, along comes the wind and the rain…a huge nor’easter that blacks out power on the island and traps Slate and Holly together in Pieberry House, Holly’s falling-down inn!
What’s next for you?
You may have seen my mentions of the Black Hills Wolves above? LOL! My second Black Hills Wolves story, ANOTHER CHANCE, will release from Decadent Publishing in February. The hero, Chance Northridge, is the brother of my first BHW book, WOLF’s SONG, which came out earlier this year. And now I’m working on my third, SAFE AT HOME. The heroine is another longlost Northridge sibling. I hope we’ll see that sometime next year!
Capricorn Slate Claybourne, an ex-Seal and former sniper who has seen and done things in country that no man should endure, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry Island, desperate for the mundane, everyday routines he once wanted to escape.
A broken, soul-dead man unable to be around people, his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.
But animated Aries Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be, when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists, and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.
First she crashes into him at the island’s holiday Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment. Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way.
But when a furious December nor’easter traps them together at Pieberry House, will Slate and Holly overcome their pasts and discover they are two halves of a whole?
Yin meet yang. Night meet day. Mutable force meet immoveable object.
Every one of Holly’s most compulsive, impulsive brain waves fluttered like a hummingbird wing. Slate Claybourne affected her like the aftershock of an earthquake. Abuzz with excited tremors, she didn’t know whether to leap into his arms and climb him or run screaming away in the other direction.
Oh, yes, you do know, girlie-girl, one of the imps on her shoulder crooned.
Danger, danger, Will Robinson, the imp on the other shoulder screamed in warning protest.
Why had her father told her to search out the former SEAL? The “if you’re reading this”letter he’d sent—not to be opened until she’d met Captain Claybourne—burned a hole beneathher pillow at Pieberry House, still unopened and unread. Had Dad thought the infamous Sand Shark would protect her from her string of notoriously bad choices?
Just looking at the ripped and cut former SEAL in the flesh made her stupid and silly and all but dissolved the remnants of her filter, always fragile during the most mundane of times and less than a wisp of thread now.
